Here is a vintage Corvette that is far more affordable than so many others but is still an exceptional car.
We are talking about a rare 4-speed 1981 model (about 14% of production) in its original black color and with a plethora of options; air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power seat, power antenna, dual remote mirrors, rear defogger, glass t-tops, aluminum wheels, and more.
It also looks, runs, and drives like a much newer car.
This is one of the cleanest C3 models we've had.
Built in St.
Louis in late January 1981, it now shows 56,900 miles and has a clean Autocheck report going back to 1987.
While black paint is very revealing, the body shows no signs of fiberglass damage or accidents.
The frame is solid as well without any rust concerns.
This car features the optional glass t-tops with a nice storage bag.
It also has the optional slotted aluminum wheels which appear original.
Everything looks factory stock; no add-on spoilers, badges, luggage rack, or other gimmicks.
Under the hood is the numbers-matching 350ci L81 engine.
This was the only powerplant available in 1981 and featured unique magnesium valve covers.
The exhaust has been replaced with a true dual setup with Flowmaster mufflers that give it a great sound.
Note the smog pump belt and the catalytic converter have been removed.
The transmission is the previously mentioned 4-speed Super T-10.
This was the final year for a 4-speed C3, and only 5,757 such cars were built vs.
more than 35,000 automatics! The rest of the running gear is standard Corvette with an independent rear suspension, 4-wheel power disc brakes, and power steering.
The interior is the original code 752 Medium Red leather.
The seats are in remarkable condition for their age and really look great against the black exterior, especially with the t-tops removed.
Here too everything appears stock with the exception of a digital radio.
There is also an amplifier hidden in the rear storage compartment and a factory power antenna.
The cold air conditioning has been converted to R134a and was recently serviced.
The headlights, wipers, turn signals, parking brake, courtesy lights, and power windows / locks / seat all work properly.
1981 was an interesting year for the Corvette.
It was the last year for St.
Louis production and the first year for Bowling Green production.
The last year for a manual transmission C3.
The first year a power seat was available.
And the first year since 1954 that only one engine was offered.
Corvettes remain one of the most desirable classic cars on the market and their values typically reflect that.
But this one carries a very reasonable price despite being a quality car with great options, making it a perfect way to join the Corvette club without breaking the bank.
