The first-generation Shelby GT350 is one of the most identifiable and desirable Mustangs of all time.
This 1966 replica really delivers on the look and performance of these legendary cars.
It combines the classic fastback lines and Shelby accents with a thundering 418ci engine, 5-speed transmission, and 4-wheel disc brakes.
The result captures the spirit of an early Shelby Mustang but at a fraction of the price.
This example started life as a genuine A-code fastback.
Note some fastbacks on the market are actually converted coupes, with 07 in the VIN instead of 09.
But not this one.
It received a very nice repaint in Wimbledon White with Guardsman Blue stripes.
All the chrome pieces and moldings were replaced or reconditioned, as were the lenses, emblems, and trim pieces.
The bullet racing mirror is a nice touch too.
The factory hood was replaced with a fiberglass piece that features a steel frame and integral scoop.
This car has also been lowered which really gives it a great stance, and the 15 Shelby style alloy wheels wear BF Goodrich tires showing 2017/2018 date codes.
This fastback may look great on the outside but the best part is under the hood.
While originally equipped with a nice 289ci 4v engine, this Mustang now runs a 418ci small block Windsor that really roars.
This is a borderline race engine that will run on pump gas but really likes to rev.
It features a steel stroker crankshaft, billet lower girdle, H-beam rods, JE pistons, and a solid roller camshaft.
Up top are Edelbrock Victor Jr.
aluminum heads along with a Victor Jr.
aluminum intake topped by a DaVinci performance carburetor.
The ignition uses an MSD distributor and 6AL box with a 7,000 rpm chip.
There is also a 7-1/2 quart Trans Am style oil pan and a Carter mechanical fuel pump with regulator.
Exhaust is through a set of Hedman headers with exits ahead of the rear wheelwells (just like Shelby did).
The sound is amazing! The engine is backed by an aluminum flywheel and McLeod twin disc clutch.
This feeds a robust Tremec TKO-600 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive for easy highway speeds.
A Dynotech aluminum driveshaft with safety hoop then transfers power to a big 9 Ford rear end containing a Currie Detroit Locker with 3.
89 gears.
The brakes have been converted to 4-wheel discs which include a functional parking brake.
An export brace and Monte Carlo bar help strengthen the front end, while the suspension features stiffer springs, a 1 stabilizer bar, and override traction bars.
It all makes for more performance than you usually see on these Mustangs.
The black interior is standard Mustang but with a few Shelby features.
These include a 4-point roll bar, R-model package tray / rear seat delete kit, and a center dash pod with rpm and oil pressure gauges.
The seats, headliner, carpet, door panels, and dash have all been redone.
Same with the door seals and window felts.
There is a nice wooden steering wheel and a stock looking shifter with 5-speed pattern.
You will also find 3 seat belts with racing style latches.
The speedometer, gauges, lights, turn signals, heater, defroster, wipers, washers, and horn all work properly.
Same with the parking brake, air vents, quarter window vents, and the original AM radio.
While a real Shelby GT350 would be great to have (and much more expensive), this one gives you the same look but with far more car.
It looks fantastic and is not that far removed from a Group 6 race car.
Be prepared to draw lots of attention with this one.
