Here is a very special Mustang.
With a VIN ending in 161273 and a scheduled build date of June 10, 1964, this car represents one of the first 25 or so K-code Mustangs ever built.
It is flush with original, correct parts throughout and includes some great documentation as well.
And beyond these accolades, it is a great looking turn-key car that offers all the excitement of a first-generation Mustang.
We begin with some history.
This car was originally ordered through Ford's Phoenix, AZ district sales office and shipped to the Sutton Brock Motor Company of Alamogordo, NM.
It was purchased new on 7-21-65 by a gentleman named Cleo who was stationed at the Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico.
Supporting documentation includes the original dealer folder, owner's manual, Ford ID card, registration certificate, and insurance paperwork.
As one of the first K-code Mustangs, this car was scheduled to be built on June 10, 1964 (the very first production K-code was June 7).
However, per Mustang historian Scott McMullen, demand had overwhelmed Ford at that time which pushed build dates out several weeks.
This is evidenced by some component casting and subassembly dates showing as late as July 2.
But enough history; let's talk about the present day.
This attractive coupe represents an older refurbishment that still looks nice.
It received a repaint in its original Caspian Blue metallic color, while all the chrome and brightwork were also redone.
The car has a solid, rust-free body with re-skinned quarter panels.
Be sure to look at those beautiful factory pinch welds on the rocker panels! And you can't miss the High Performance fender badges up front.
It also has OEM riveted styled steel wheels with the correct K-code dual redline tires (albeit radials) showing 2022 date codes.
The engine is the original 289ci 271hp K-code.
The block shows a casting number of C4OE-6015-F and a casting date of June 3 along with a correct VIN stamp.
The engine assembly date shows as June 26 which is correct per the above.
Note as an early K-code this block is a 5-bolt casting and has a factory high performance serial number stamp of 6067; very rare! Other proper features and dates include the Hi-Po heads (April 24), Autolite C40F-AL carburetor (late April), Carter CARbureTER fuel pump (June), intake manifold (June 19), exhaust manifolds (C4ZE-9430-A and C30E-9431-B) non-advance dual point distributor, thick harmonic balancer, and 30A generator with larger pulley.
Note too all the date marked hoses with correct clamps.
The 4-speed Toploader transmission also shows a full VIN stamp along with a factory riveted HEH-S tag which indicates a Mustang close-ratio before 8-20-64.
The 9 rear end has a casting date of May 29 with an assembly tag showing early June with a WCZ-H code, reflecting a 3.
89 ratio for high performance Mustang applications.
The 3.
89 ratio also matches the door tag code 8.
The steering box is the correct HCC-AX 16:
1 unit with a June 10 date code.
Note as a true performance Mustang this car uses manual steering and brakes.
Everything is in proper operating condition throughout which contributes to a fun driving experience.
The interior is standard black vinyl, quite befitting of a K-code coupe.
It has also been redone and looks terrific.
All exterior and interior lights work properly, right down to the glove box light.
Same with the turn signals, horn, wipers, heater/defroster, speedometer, fuel gauge, temperature gauge, warning lights, and AM radio.
There is also a Rally-Pac setup along with rubber Mustang floor mats.
The front seats have seat belts with 1964 date codes.
Often referred to as 1964-1/2 model, an early K-code Mustang is a rare find.
It is harder still to locate one with its original drivetrain and other components.
Combine those elements with this car's impressive condition and authentic documentation and I think you'll agree, this is indeed a very special Mustang.
